Mama Africa: Sowing the seeds of a sense of belonging

At first glance, sewing might not be an activity you’d expect at a leisure centre. Yet, every Tuesday and Thursday, Whitlam Leisure Centre transforms into a vibrant haven where up to ten women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds gather—not just to sew, but to create something far more profound.

These women may be learning essential sewing skills such as garment construction and fabric care, but what they are sewing is so much more than this; they are sowing the seeds of confidence, well-being, and a sense of belonging in a community that for many, may still feel foreign in many ways.

The Mama Africa Program offers more than just sewing skills like garment construction and fabric care. It provides a safe and nurturing environment for migrants and refugees with limited learning capacity, empowering them to overcome barriers to other educational opportunities. Here, women can improve their English, foster mental well-being, and build lasting relationships that combat isolation and depression.

A partnership between the Multicultural African Communities Network (MACN), Vinnie’s Economic Pathways for Refugees Initiative (EPRI), Liverpool City Council and Belgravia Leisure who manage Whitlam Leisure Centre, this program exemplifies the power of collaboration. With additional support through discounted childcare, Mama Africa ensures that women can focus on personal growth while their children are cared for.

Beyond sewing, the program’s impact extends to life-saving initiatives like water safety and swimming lessons for families. Plans are also underway to introduce well-being sessions for seniors and expand the program in January to include cooking, road safety, and digital literacy—further broadening its reach and impact.

Tahnee Hart, Venue Manager at Whitlam Leisure Centre, reflects on its significance:

“We are thrilled to support the Mama Africa sewing program at Whitlam Leisure Centre. This initiative is about much more than teaching sewing skills; it’s about creating a welcoming and inclusive space where women can build meaningful connections, improve their English and social skills, and feel a stronger sense of belonging within the wider community.”

Programs like Mama Africa demonstrate how leisure centres can become dynamic community hubs, fostering empowerment and inclusion. Through every stitch, these women are building brighter futures for themselves and their families—and sowing the seeds for a stronger, more connected community.
