Celebrating International Day of People with Disability: Ali Naji’s journey at Whitlam Leisure Centre
In honour of International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), we’re celebrating the inspiring story of Ali Naji, Sport & Recreation Programs Assistant at Whitlam Leisure Centre. Born with cerebral palsy that required him to use a wheelchair, Ali faced significant challenges from a young age.
After moving to Australia with his family, Ali underwent surgery at just 15 years old, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.
“The surgery ultimately led to a life-changing moment in 2022 when I took my first independent steps. This milestone marked a significant moment in my life,” Ali said.
Liverpool City Council spoke with Ali and highlights his story in this video. Click here to watch the video on the Belgravia Leisure website.
Ali has always maintained a positive attitude and a passion for sports, particularly combat sports.
“I truly believe in the power of sport to improve both physical and mental wellbeing and am dedicated to making a difference by developing sports programs at Whitlam Leisure Centre. My focus is on creating inclusive opportunities for all members of our community, regardless of financial means or physical ability,” Ali said.
Dr Jeff Walkley, National Disability and Diversity Manager continued, “At Belgravia Leisure, we are deeply committed to our mission of bringing leisure to life, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all. We are so proud of Ali’s journey with us at Belgravia Leisure and the positive impact he continues to make at Whitlam Leisure Centre.”
Every year, IDPwD encourages us to reflect on how we view disability, challenge stereotypes and celebrate the achievements of people with disability. This year, we’re proud to share Ali’s story as an example of resilience, determination and the power of inclusion.
We are extremely proud of Ali and his efforts that are shaping a more inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to participate and thrive.
